Experience high mountains easily - over the Gatterl to the Zugspitze (2962m).
Tours in the high mountains are always extremely long and very exhausting! Not true, because with the “Gatterl” hiking ticket from the Ehrwalder Almbahn we can also get to the Zugspitze (2962m) more easily. Good condition and sure-footedness are still in demand on our tour to the roof of Germany, but with the rail support we simply have more time for landscape, panorama and a cozy get-together.
We meet at the Ehrwalder Zugspitzbahn and drive together to the Ehrwalder Almbahn, from where we take the mountain railway up to the Ehrwalder Alm. From there it is a little easier below the large walls of Wetter- and Plattspitze, then more steeply up to the Brandjoch. There we strengthen ourselves and enjoy the view of the wild Miemminger Mountain range.
Then we continue to the Gatterl, where we not only get from Austria to Germany, but also into a completely new landscape. The impressive "karst" landscape of the Zugspitze plateau opens up in front of us, which is often still covered in snow until late summer. Our next stage goal is the Knorrhütte, where we prepare for the last big climb of the day with a little rest with food and drinks.
The last climb leads us through the bizarre stone and grass formations of the plateau up to the SonnAlpin glacier restaurant. On the last 400 meters of altitude, it gets a bit more strenuous to get to the roof of Germany and finally let us be captivated by the fabulous all-round view.
Finally, the Tiroler Zugspitz mountain railway brings us down into the valley, from which we can once again look back with satisfaction and pride at the Zugspitz summit.
