The Carnic High Trail is one of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in the Alps. Over six days, the so-called Peace Trail takes us along the Austrian-Italian border, past striking peaks, blooming alpine meadows and impressive relics from the First World War.
The combination of imposing mountain panoramas, varied hiking trails, historic positions and culinary highlights makes this tour a very special experience.
On most stages, we follow the ridge between Austria and Italy. Again and again, breathtaking views of the Dolomites, the Hohe Tauern and the Julian Alps open up. At the same time, we encounter a past that is still clearly visible in this mountain world: during the First World War, one of the most fiercely contested front lines ran through here. For years, soldiers faced each other in high alpine terrain – the remains of trenches, positions and rock shelters still bear witness to this today.
But the Carnic High Trail is not only shaped by history. Along the way, small rustic huts and alpine pastures invite you to take a well-deserved break – sometimes with classic Austrian hut fare, sometimes with Italian specialities.

Who is this tour suitable for?
The multi-day hike on the Carnic High Trail is aimed at experienced mountain hikers who are in very good physical condition. Anyone who already has experience with multi-day tours or crossing the Alps, is sure-footed in alpine terrain and has a head for heights will enjoy unforgettable days on this tour.

Tour itinerary:

Day 1: The first stage of our hike is manageable in terms of distance, but physically demanding: we have to climb around 1,300 meters in altitude. The ascent first takes us steeply up to the idyllically situated Leckfeldalm. After a well-deserved break, we hike along a well-maintained trail to the Leckfeldsattel. Here, a breathtaking panoramic view of the striking peaks of the Sesto Dolomites opens up – above all the world-famous Three Peaks. An unforgettable moment right at the start of the tour! After a short climb, we reach the Sillianer Hütte, spectacularly located on the Carnic main ridge. Here we end the first day of hiking with a fantastic view and gather new strength for the stages ahead.
Ascent: approx. 1300 m, distance: 7 km, walking time: approx. 6 hours

Day 2: The second day of our tour takes us over scenic peaks and varied terrain. Right at the start, we cross the Hornischeck. With a great panoramic view, we hike along the border ridge and discover old military positions again and again. This stage requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. Along the way, we can take in the summit of the Eisenreich (2,665 m), which rewards us with magnificent panoramic views. We then descend towards the Obstansersee Hut. Located on the shore of an idyllic mountain lake, it offers the perfect backdrop to relax and end the day's hike.
Ascent: 650 m, descent: approx. 650 m, distance: 10 km, walking time: approx. 6 hours

Day 3: The day begins with a special highlight: on the Pfannspitze (2,678 m), we reach the highest point of the entire Carnic High Trail. From there, the trail leads us past the striking, wild rock scenery of the Kinigat until we reach the rustic and small Filmoor-Standschützenhütte – a beautiful place to rest and recharge our batteries. Refreshed, we descend across wide alpine pastures to the Upper Stuckersee lake and then climb again to the Heretriegel, where the impressive north faces of the Porze (2,599 m) tower above us. This mountain massif is particularly impressive when crossing the Rosskar, before we finally descend to the cozy Porze Hut.
Ascent: approx. 810 m, descent: 1170 m, distance: 12 km, walking time: 7 hours

Day 4: Today's queen stage is characterized by varied ascents and descents and leads us to our stage destination, the Hochweißsteinhaus (1,867 m). We start with the ascent to the Tilliacher Joch and continue along small paths to the Kesselscharte. Good trails take us on to the Hochspitzsenke. Along the way, impressive views of the surrounding peaks and valleys of the Carnic Alps open up again and again. From here, the terrain leads steeply and securely uphill towards the Hochspitz Joch. After the Hochspitz Joch, we reach the Luggauer Törl via the high trail. We hike down into the Frohntal valley and climb the last 200 meters of altitude back up to the rustic Hochweißsteinhaus.
Ascent: approx. 1250 m, descent: 1300 m, distance: 18 km, walking time: approx. 10-11 hours

Day 5: This stage inspires with its scenic diversity – the day starts with a short climb to the Öfnerjoch, where a new panorama opens up. On the Italian side, we hike through idyllic forest and alpine pasture areas to the Giramondo Pass. After a short drink break at the fountain of the Wolayer Alm, we climb to Lake Wolayer, whose crystal-clear surface in the midst of the impressive high mountain backdrop of the mighty Seewarte invites you to marvel – a real highlight of the entire tour. Just a few steps away is our destination for the day, the Wolayer Lake Hut (1,967 m). We enjoy our last evening in the hut with a fantastic view of the lake and the Seewarte and a very good dinner.
Ascent: 950 m, descent: 850 m, distance: 14.5 km, walking time: approx. 8 hours

Day 6: From the Wolayersee Hut, we ascend to the Valentinstörl (2,138 m). On our final descent towards Valentinsalm, we enjoy the special atmosphere of this region once again before descending to the Plöcken Pass and taking a transfer back to Sillian.
Ascent: approx. 200 m, descent: 960 m, distance: 8 km, walking time: approx. 4 Hours
