Over three intensive course days, you will master all the basics of climbing frozen waterfalls. Hazard assessment, equipment knowledge, and independent climbing and rappelling using ice "hourglasses" represent just a fraction of the course Content.

The Matreier Tauernhaus, situated right in the heart of the Hohe Tauern mountains at an altitude of 1,512 meters, serves as the ideal basecamp for our ice climbing course. The Eispark Osttirol is Austria’s largest artificial ice park. Thanks to its high-altitude location, this icefall offers exceptional ice reliability. Furthermore, with an approach time of just 20 minutes from the Matreier Tauernhaus, this ice climbing venue is truly hard to beat. After a strenuous day of climbing, you can soothe your tired muscles in the Matreier Tauernhaus’s rustic, on-site sauna.

Crampon-compatible mountaineering boots are available for rent from us for a fee of €35 per day.

Itinerary

Day 1: After checking in at the Matreier Tauernhaus, we begin with an equipment check and an introduction to the various pieces of gear and their specific applications. We take a leisurely hike to the nearby ice climbing park to attempt our first top-rope climbs on the ice and ensure that all participants are on the same page regarding belaying techniques. An initial introduction to placing ice screws, as well as climbing and swinging techniques, rounds off this first day.

Day 2:

Initially, we will focus on seconding (following the lead climber), but we will use this time to practice placing ice screws while in a climbing position. A further key focus of the day will be on climbing technique and tactics. How can I climb in the most energy-efficient way possible, and where should I place my protection points for maximum efficiency?

Day 3:

Today, we will consolidate the knowledge we have acquired and make our first attempts at lead climbing—still secured via top-rope if necessary. The central topic of anchor building takes top priority on today's agenda.

After a final meal together, we will begin our journey home in the afternoon.

Course Information:

• Meeting Point: 9:00 AM at the Matreier Tauernhaus

• Tour End: Approx. 3:00 PM on the final day
