The Kaiser Max via ferrata near Innsbruck leads through the steep Martinswand and is one of the most difficult sports via ferratas in the Eastern Alps. Due to its south-facing location, it is accessible throughout the whole year. By the time of exit, 300 suspended climbing meters want to be overcome. On the final 100 meters are the main difficulties with the steepest points oft he route. Rarely does an iron path require so much arm strength and psyche from the hiker.
We meet on this days morning at the parking lot under the Martinswand. From there we climb comfortably about 10 minutes over a path through the forest to the entrance. We view the steep wall all the time, curious about what to expect. Arrived at the entrance we put on our safety equipment - helmet climbing harness and via ferrata set. Then the Kaiser-Marx via ferrata shows us right on the first meters that the next about 300 meters of altitude will be a strenuous undertaking. Several very steep rock passages mixed with impressive cross passages with deep views draw the lower and middle area of the via ferrata, which with a via ferrata rating of E is at the upper end of the scale. The upper part is a bit steeper than the lower part and we are challenged and are allowed to tackle properly. The difficulties here move over longer passages in area E. Between the steep passages we use the rest points to shake out our arms. After the 300 exhausting meters we get out of the wall and can enjoy the view to the fullest.
In the upper part of the descent we follow an easy via ferrata to Maximilians Grotte. The climbing points up to difficulty level B no longer cause us any major problems, as we have already mastered much more difficult things today. From the grotto we follow a path back to the starting point.
