For experienced and sure-footed mountain hikers, the hike around the Grossglockner is an absolute pleasure in a class of its own. On 5 daily stages we hike around the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner. On wonderfully lush alpine meadows, along wild mountain ridges and over impressive moraines, where the mighty glaciers used to run along. Every day offers exhilarating impressions of the breathtaking mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park, which is considered one of the greatest high mountain landscapes in the world. On almost every stage, idyllically situated alpine huts invite you to take a break at noon. We spend the night in the panoramic mountain huts, where we enjoy regional specialties.
From our meeting point at the Kesselfall car park, we comfortably drive with the shuttle bus to the Gasthof Mooserboden. The first part of our tour leads along the reservoir with a view. This section offers us the opportunity to take a leisurely time without major differences in altitude and we can enjoy the view of the gigantic ice breaks of the large Wiesbachhorn, the rear viola head and the Klockerin. At the end of the lake it goes over numerous serpentines over the moraine of the Karlinger Kees, the section to the Kapruner Törl at 2639m above sea level get a little more challenging. Once there, we enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the Kaprun valley and the Stubachtal. The descent from Kapruner Törl leads between huge boulders down to the moraine of the Riffl Kees, always in the direction of the picturesque Tauernmoossee. From here we reach after a further ascent over 250hm our current accommodation, the Rudolfshütte. It is located above the Weißsee, where we end the day with a view of the ice giants of the Hohe Tauern.
Total: 6h, 12,5km, ascent 900hm, descent 650hm
After a rich breakfast we start early for today's long tour. We walk around the Weißsee to tackle the steep ascent to the Erdigen Egg. After a short rest to breath , it goes down along the Kalserbach. First through a very original and wild mountain landscape and later past idyllic alpine landscapes. After the entertaining descent we soon reach the Kalser-Tauern-Haus which invites you to a cozy morning break. Soon we go the long way through the Dorfertal towards Kals, where we still have the opportunity to visit the impressive Darbaklamm on the way. From Kals we can comfortably get used to going uphill again on the initially relatively flat path and hike up to the Lucknerhaus, our current destination. Here we enjoy the view of the highest mountain in Austria, the 3,798 m high Grossglockner, with a well-deserved snack.
Total: 7h, 22km, ascent 1030hm, descent 810hm
Today is probably the highlight of our tour around the Grossglockner. In the panoramic scenery in you go 750hm up to the Glorer Hut in the morning, which is located in the center of a geomorphological nature trail. Here we have earned a leisurely stop. Soon we continue and we hike through the Leitertal in the direction of Heiligenblut, where we may also discover one or the other Edelweiss. On beautiful paths we go further and further out through the Leitertal until we turn north. Accompanied by the whistles of the marmots, we now continue to the Glocknerhaus. Soon the Pasterze appears in our field of vision, that gigantic glacier at the foot of the Grossglockner. With a phenomenal look, we enjoyed the well-deserved after-work beer twice.
Total: 7h, 15km, ascent 1100hm, descent 990hm
After the invigorating breakfast we go over the alpine landscapes of the Trögeralm, in the direction of Pfandlscharte. In any case, it is worth taking a look back at the Grossglockner and the Pasterze. Our path soon leads us over the moraine ridges of the former glacier, as well as past a beautiful blue green glowing glacial lake, up to the lower Pfandlscharte, where we can certainly put a little hand on the rock. Here we deserve a momrnt to breath and can treat ourselves with a short break with a breathtaking panoramic view. Soon our path leads us further, down the Pfandlboden, past glacier remains and over moraine slopes, until we soon dive back into lush alpine landscapes. Arrived in the idyllic valley of the Ferleitental, we now go relatively flat out to Ferleiten, where our current accommodation is located. With a cozy evening we let the day end and look forward to tomorrow.
Total: 6h, 16km, ascent 530hm, descent 1520hm
The last, very exhausting day starts quite comfortably, but early and we save a part of the way along the valley floor and drive to Fusch by bus. This is where today's long rise begins. We hike along the Hirzbachtal, where the vegetation clears up in direction to the Hirzbachalm, where we are once again surrounded by lush alpine meadows with streams in the postcard kitsch motif. Of course, this place invites you to a rest, and so we enjoy a snack. Freshly strengthened, we will soon tackle the last part of our climb. Panoramic and quite entertaining it goes again steep 430hm up to the Gleiwitzer Hütte, which is located in a very original high mountain landscape. With an inspiring view of the Hohe Tenn, as well as far-reaching views to the Dachstein and the stone sea, the regional specialties of this hut taste even better. After this extended lunch break, we go over numerous serpentines. But with a fabolous view in direction of the Kapruner Tal, from where we take the bus back to our starting point at the Kesselfallparkplatz.
