The “Safe Winter Hiking” course teaches you everything you need to know to plan and carry out winter hikes independently, safely and well prepared.

Snow-covered landscapes, crisp mountain air and impressive panoramic views make hiking during the colder months a truly special experience. At the same time, snow, ice and shorter days place greater demands on planning, navigation and equipment. This is exactly where this course comes in.

You will learn how to use microspikes correctly and practise safe walking on icy paths, during traverses and in slippery terrain. You will also receive a solid introduction to efficient walking techniques, including energy-saving ascent and descent techniques in winter conditions.

A key part of the course is winter tour planning. You will learn how to select suitable tours based on available daylight and the position of the sun, realistically estimate walking times and time reserves, and incorporate weather, snow and terrain conditions into your planning.

As trails are often covered and no longer visible in winter, navigation also plays an important role. You will practise reading maps, using GPS and assessing terrain features in snow-covered landscapes. You will also learn how to make good decisions even in limited visibility, build sensible time reserves into your planning and set turnaround times to minimise risks.

The course is rounded off with a comprehensive overview of suitable winter equipment – from the layering principle for clothing and appropriate footwear to hiking poles, backpacks, food and emergency equipment.

Itinerary

Day 1: After meeting the group, we will cover equipment, keeping warm and the importance of time management during winter hikes.

Day 2: Today, we will focus intensively on map reading and navigation in winter terrain during a short hike. In the evening, we will plan a hike together, taking all the aspects learned during the course into account.

Day 3: We will put everything into practice by completing a hike planned by the group.
