We start our tour on the Zugspitze in Mittenwald and pass, off the well-known climbs, the two beautiful mountain lakes Lautersee and Ferchensee. On the mountain trails in the direction Schachenhaus we have the opportunity to be on quite lonely, original and beautiful trails on this day. In a breathtaking mountain scenery with a gigantic view of the Wetterstein massif we hike along the wild Wetterstein ridge until we meet the other hikers from the Reintal. The last part of the way to the Zugspitze we will do together with them.
1st day (1170 Hm ascent / 15 Km / 8h)
We meet at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen station to catch the next train to Mittenwald. We walk past the picturesque mountain lakes Lautersee and Ferchensee always in the direction of our destination, the Zugspitze. Soon it goes uphill to the Schützensteig which leads us along the foot of the Wettersteingrat to the rustic Wettersteinalm. Here is the possibility of a lunch break with a hearty snack. From here we hike along hunter and deer paths to our overnight stay today, the Schachenhaus, where King Ludwig spent his vacation.
2nd day (350Hm climb / 810Hm descent / 9km / 4h)
After the exhausting day before, we take it a bit easier today. We start with a rich and delicious breakfast and then take part in a viewing of the really impressive Schachenschloss. The adjacent botanical garden can also be visited on request. Around noon, we then climb the viewing platform "Teufelsgsaß" over into the Oberreintal, the climbers eldorado of Wetterstein. We walk down to the Bockhütte, where we enjoy delicious home-made cakes. Here we also meet the Zugspitztour through the Reintal. Together with the other Zugspitze climbers it goes deeper into Reintal, below gigantic cliffs, always along the picturesque river Partnach with his deep blue Gumpen towards their origin. Soon we reach today's accommodation, the Reintalangerhütte. We enjoy the cozy evening and look forward to tomorrow's "Gipfelsturm".
3rd day (1550Hm ascent / 7,5km / 7h)
After a decent breakfast, which we will need today, we start our most strenuous part of the tour. Soon it goes about slippery slopes steeply up to Knorrhütte, where we deserve a rest. The further way leads us over the Zugspitzplatt, where formerly glacier was, up to the cable car station Sonnalpin. Here we have the possibility to take the cable car for the rest of the stage or we climb over steep gravel terrain and an insured mountain path up to the summit of the Zugspitze. Once at the top, we treat ourselves on the sun terrace to a delicious cool drink, which we have earned honestly. We enjoy the breathtaking panorama all the way to the Hohe Tauern, the Ötztaler and the Allgäu Alps. Finally we descend with the historically significant Zugspitze cog railway, which brings us back to our starting point, the Garmisch train station.
Three unforgettable days lie behind us in which we hiked on the historic ways of King Ludwig and finally climbed the highest peak in Germany.
