Part 2: Training of Surefootedness, Walking Technique, and Overcoming Fear of Heights (2 days)

Part 4: Navigation with Map and Compass (2 days)
Part 5: Traversing Old Snowfields (1 day)

2-Day Course – Navigation in the Mountains with Map, Compass & GPS

“Only those who know where they are can safely continue their journey.” This saying may apply to life in general, but it is especially true when moving through mountain terrain or in sparsely populated regions such as Norway or Sweden.

If you always have a rough idea of your current position, you can enjoy your tour in a relaxed and stress-free way — even when something unexpected happens, such as an approaching thunderstorm. You will always be able to estimate how long it takes to reach the next hut, the next junction, or a possible emergency descent.

While orientation in urban areas is simple nowadays thanks to smartphones and Google Maps — where you essentially just follow the arrow — the situation in the mountains or in regions without reliable network coverage is fundamentally different.

In this 2-day course, a wide range of navigation techniques will be introduced and practiced hands-on. We work with modern digital tools such as smartphones and GPS devices, but we also spend extensive time on classical, “analog” methods of finding your way using map, compass, altimeter, and watch. In addition, we make use of the information nature provides, such as vegetation, the sun, moon, and stars.

Throughout the course, we hike through the beautiful mountain scenery of the Werdenfels Alps. After starting on marked easy and moderate trails, we will gradually make excursions into wild and untouched terrain away from established paths. By the end of this intensive 2-day course, every participant will be confident in using maps, compasses, and GPS, and will understand many natural navigation techniques.

This course is ideal for anyone who frequently spends time in the mountains and wants to improve their navigation skills, as well as for trekkers who travel through sparsely populated regions.

Course Information:

Duration: 2 days
Meeting point: 8:30 a.m. at the agreed Location (exact location will be provided one week before the tour)
Base huts for this course: Kreuzeckhaus, Wankhaus, or Weilheimer Hütte
